Zwide’s Tree

Deep in the tiny but very busy town of Nongoma is Zwide’s tree, which cements the town being the homestead of the once great king of the Ndwandwe tribe which defeated and killed a number of kings including Dingiswayo of the Mthethwas, The Mncwango’s , Phungashe of the Buthelezi tribe and others.

Zwide’s Tree is where he would have held his meeting with the ibandla, or to attend to cases brought to him for judgment, inkantolo yamacala.

Nongoma Community Radio Station

Is a local community radio station with its studios just 3 kilometers from Nongoma town. This is one of the fastest growing and the biggest community radio station in northern kwaZulu Natal. It broadcasts in iSiZulu language and by a young vibrant youth DJ’s that understand the values of the Zulu culture as it serves the kingdom with pride. The Station Manager is Prince Siboniso Zulu of a royal blood, also a young visionary, who has driven the grown of the station and forged relations with radio station from USA called KBMF Radio. The station was opened in 2015 June by his Majesty the late king Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu after opening remarks by the Chief of Mandlakazi nation, Chief Bhekintinta kaPhumanyova. The station can be reached on 88.3 FM and also on the live stream.

iNkunzane River

Inkunzane river flows just behind the royal palace of kwaKhangelamankengane, named after King Shaka’s palace and regiment. This river is revered by many, and many spiritual healers conduct cleansing rituals here. On a normal day this river has beautiful views and you can find young local boys swimming and people washing cars or photoshoot sessions by local photographers.

On the route, R66 road from Nongoma town, you will pass the old St. Benedictine Hospital, then on the right turn toward Pongola you will pass kwaKhethomthandayo Royal Palace where the late king memorial service was hosted, then within 10 kilometers you will pass kwaKhangelamankengane royal palace gate then you have arrived in Nkunzane river.

Mvoveni Valley

When you leave Nongoma town and take a dust route that takes you to PholaBella, the local Massage and Beauty Spa, which is exactly one kilometer from Nongoma town then take a right turn on the road towards Manzimakhulu river, you will find these beautiful valleys a kilometer away, it flows down to Manzimakhulu river. This is only 2 kilometers from Nongoma town.

iZihlalo

EZihlalo is part of the huge land that King Shaka gave to Ngqengelele kaMvulane of the Buthelezi clan. This place has beautiful rock hills views, and these rocks are referenced in King Senzangakhona’s praise names, referring his to this Zihlalo huge rock used to sharpen kings’ weapons called iNhlendla. The areas is still occupied mostly by Buthelezi descendants. Between 30 and 45 minutes you reach these beautiful views from Nongoma town.
